Training Workshop on Mapping for a Sustainable World
The ICA Commissions on Sustainable Development and the User Experience will offer a free two-day Mapping for a Sustainable World Training Workshop in Harare, Zimbabwe on Tuesday 8 August & Wednesday 9 August, 2023 from 9 am to 4 pm on both days. The venue is the Cresta Lodge, corner Robert Mugabe Rd and Samora Machel Ave, Msasa, Harare, Zimbabwe.
About the Workshop:
Together, Drs. Britta Ricker and Robert Roth, two authors of the book Mapping for a Sustainable World, will present key concepts from the book followed by hands-on tutorials. Each day will start with lectures and in the afternoons participants will make their own maps, using real United Nations data from the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) indicator framework. Cartography is both the art and science of map making, and the workshop offers an opportunity to apply creativity and implement concepts related to material in the book. While prior experience Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and/or cartography are useful, they are not required for participation.
As part of this workshop, participants will learn about the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and how to map them. Each day, participants will be introduced to the fundamentals of cartography through a lecture followed by a hands-on tutorial, or a creative break. There will be a lecture and cartographic break each morning and afternoon. In addition to design and technical considerations relevant to map making, participants will learn about the power of maps. Participants will be given the opportunity to put these new cartography principles into practice using open source (free!) geographic information system (GIS) software. Skills learned in this workshop are transferable to other places, geographic scale, and data types. After this workshop, participants will have the ability to make your own maps that will never look at a map the same way again.
Participants will receive a formal certificate of participation from the International Cartographic Association.
